A monthly celebration featuring Florida’s emerging filmmakers and visual artists

As part of A Series of Indie Events, Churchills Pub and Funktional Interiors announce FLICKER. An event dedicated to showcasing established and student filmmakers and artists in related fields, giving film lovers an opportunity to experience local emerging talent. Live music is an integrated part of FLICKER, as Churchills Pub, being a live music venue, has been a proud supporter of the independent music community in South Florida for twenty-eight years.
Four artists have been selected to participate in our inaugural event taking place on January 10th 2008; headlining the evening is filmmaker Franco Parente and accompanying him are student filmmakers Romina Rey , Alexa Taravia and graphic designer Mariana Mendoza.
Filmmaker Franco Parente has spent the last ten years working as an assistant director on countless television commercials, music videos and narrative films, for the US, Hispanic and European markets.
In 2005, Franco produced his first short film, PSYCHOBABBLE, winning the Best Comedic Short award at the Made in Miami Film Festival and touring festivals around the country while he also wrote, produced and directed his first two short films IRISH LUCK and GAS for regional curated competitions in Florida. His first effort, IRISH LUCK, took the runner-up award for the Entertainment Incubator and GAS won the Best Acting award for the 48HR Film Project. His latest short film, CASPER & KITTY won the Grand Prize at this year’s Entertainment Incubator and will be making the festival rounds in 2008.
Franco is currently in post-production of a 35mm short film drama entitled SUNSHINE that will be completed this fall. He is also in development on his first feature film that he would like to make entirely in South Florida.

Mariana Mendoza, also known as Figure M, is one of Miami’s most creative and stylistically-unique graphic designers. Although Mariana’s abilities vary in range from professional image packaging to music album covers, she is best known as a gifted artist with her own signature.

Figure M’s training and background include a 2 year "bauhaus style" graphic design program from the Miami Ad School, one of the most respected advertising schools both nationally and internationally; and an extensive knowledge of integrating from sketchpad to digital media. Her competences include free-hand illustration, digital illustration, street and still photography, metal sculpting, corky poetry, human pretzel, and the personification of everyday objects.


An eclectic musical line-up will include local bands Tereso, King Bee, Los Borrachos Empeñados and the funky Afrobeta. In the patio enjoy musical landscapes by Heather Holiday, Mike Sike and J Meletiche.


Festivities commence January 10th at 9pm at Miami’s own cradle of all things indie, Churchills Pub, located at 5501 N.E. 2nd Ave. The cover charge will be $7 for general audience and $5 with student ID.18 and over event.
